Been coming to Penny for the last 15 years for my haircuts. Wouldn't let anyone else take care of it.

I wanted to praise hairstylist Penny Lee at Edgy Hair Salon. She gave me a beautiful, sculptural and incredibly flattering cut yesterday. I happened to be driving on Western, bemoaning an overgrown, helmet head of a cut, when I spotted their storefront. I consulted Yelp and convinced they were great, walked in without an appointment. Penny was still kind enough to accommodate me. She and her husband, Young Lee, have been cutting hair for decades here in Koreatown and also Beverly Hills. They used to have a different location on Alexandria St. but moved to Western about half a year ago. They apparently had a huge, cult following in their old location, but moved here to provide better parking options for customers. Penny comes from a fashion background and was trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica. She did a marvelous job with my cut. I have coarse, thick, wavy / kinky Korean hair, and it's short. I've been told by stylists that it's a challenging hair type to work with. Penny is such a pro, however. She listened to my concerns about the way my hair grew out, shaped itself around the dome, plus my grievances and concerns about past cuts gone astray. She listened and understood and seemed to know what to do. She applied wonderful methods and techniques from what seemed like a vast arsenal of knowledge and skill. I was so happy with my cut, from the neckline to the overall geometry and angles, as well as the bangs. She built in a lot of versatility for styling and advised me on advanced hair grooming techniques. For a change, I didn't walk out of a salon feeling like an ajuma with a 'do from another decade. She gave me a smart, flattering and fresh cut, and I have every confidence it will grow out well and last a while. I've had "edgy" cuts before, but at this juncture in my life, just want a super awesome, expressive and versatile cut that'll frame my face well and grow out well. If you want an edgy cut, I'm sure they can give that to you, but if you don't, don't let the name of the salon scare you away! The other stylists I saw in the salon were all incredibly fashion forward. I'm sure they have mad skills. My cut plus shampoo and blow dry came to $50, plus tip. That may or may not be in everyone's budget ballpark, but for the quality alone, it's a great value. There is valet parking in the plaza for a $1, as well as street and metered parking nearby. I am really grateful for Edgy's arrival in the K-town hair scene---I feel like they honor individuality and will really strive to give you something that fits your face and style. I will be sure to return. Thank you, Penny! It's a day later and the cut still looks great! But I knew that the moment you finished the cut. Thank you for your skill and care!!! It is a testament to your artistry and mastery of this medium. I am really pleased and this is exactly the new me I needed to see in the mirror. Thank you!!!
